'Help' holds top in US boxoffice on its 3rd week

The hard-working maids of “The Help” hung on to the top of a storm-battered box office over the weekend and beat a trio of new releases with $14.3m in domestic ticket sales, studio estimates released yesterday showed.

Hurricane Irene forced the closure of theaters in big markets such as New York and kept moviegoers home along a broad stretch of the East Coast. Domestic ticket sales came in 23 percent lower than the same weekend a year earlier, according to figures from Hollywood.com.

“The Help,” a drama about black housekeepers in Civil Rights-era Mississippi, took the top spot in the North American (US and Canadian) market for the second straight weekend. The film adaptation of a best-selling novel by Kathryn Stockett has grossed $96.6m since it opened three weeks ago, distributor Walt Disney Co said.

The bad weather did not help new releases on a weekend that was expected to be slow even without a major storm.

Action movie “Columbiana” debuted in second place with an estimated $10.3m, ahead of studio forecasts of around $8m. The film features actress Zoe Saldana as a woman who witnesses her parents’ murder as a child in Bogota and grows up to be an assassin seeking revenge.

“The picture is off to a good start, storm or no storm,” said Rory Bruer, president of worldwide distribution for Columbia Pictures.

Horror movie “Don’t Be Afraid of the Dark,” starring Katie Holmes and Guy Pearce, finished third with domestic sales of $8.7 million.

Vettel won the Belgian Grand Prix

Defending Formula One champion Sebastian Vettel won the Belgian Grand Prix on Sunday to strengthen his overall lead with seven races remaining.

Vettel started from pole position to win his seventh race of the season and 17th of his career. The German led Red Bull to a 1-2 finish with Mark Webber finishing close behind.

McLaren's Jenson Button started way down in 13th spot, but he caught Fernando Alonso near the end to take third place.

Lewis Hamilton's slim title hopes took a further blow as he crashed his McLaren early on.

Hamilton slipped to fifth in the standings, 113 points behind Vettel, who has a 92-point advantage over second-placed Webber.

Vettel secured pole position for the ninth time in 12 races this season. But he had not won any of the last three GPs in Britain, Germany and Hungary, and only one of the last five heading into Spa, prompting speculation that he was losing his grip on the title.

Vettel's jubilation was evident at ending that winless run as he stood on top of his Red Bull after the race, and pumped his fists in delight.

"What a race!" he told his Red Bull team over the race radio at the end.

The 24-year-old overcame significant tyre wear early on and held off Alonso when the Spaniard was pressuring strongly.

Twenty years after making his F1 debut on the same track, seven-time former champion Michael Schumacher started from last place after crashing during the first lap of Saturday's qualifying session.

The 42-year-old German drove his Mercedes with panache to finish in fifth place behind Alonso.

Tyre management proved a crucial factor in Vettel's win on the 7-kilometer (4.3-mile) Spa circuit — the longest and arguably the most difficult on the F1 calendar.

Steve Jobs resigns from Apple, Tim Cook becomes CEO

Silicon Valley legend Steve Jobs relinquished the reins at Apple Inc to right-hand man Tim Cook on Wednesday, after 14 years in command at a company he brought back from the brink and turned into the world's largest technology corporation.

Jobs, who fought and survived a rare form of pancreatic cancer and revolutionized the technology arena with the iPhone in 2007, is deemed the heart and soul of a company that started in a garage and is today neck-and-neck with Exxon Mobil in the race to become the largest U.S. corporation.

Analysts do not expect Jobs' resignation -- which was more a question of when than if -- to derail Apple's fabled product-launch roadmap, including possibly a new iPhone in September and a third iteration of the iPad tablet in 2012.

But the company's shares still dived as much as 7 percent in after-hours trade after the industry icon, who has been on medical leave for an undisclosed condition since Jan. 17, announced he will be replaced by COO and heir apparent Cook.

"I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come," he said in a brief letter announcing his resignation.

The 55-year-old CEO had briefly emerged from his medical leave in March to unveil the latest version of the iPad and later to attend a dinner hosted by President Barack Obama for technology leaders in Silicon Valley.

Jobs' often-gaunt appearance has sparked questions about his health and his ability to continue at Apple.

"I will say to investors: don't panic and remain calm, it's the right thing to do. Steve will be chairman and Cook is CEO," said BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis.

AGAIN, DEEP BENCH

Jobs' resignation marks the end of an era at Apple.

A college dropout, a Buddhist and a son of adoptive parents, he started Apple Computer with friend Steve Wozniak in the Jobs family garage in Silicon Valley in the late 1970s.

The company soon introduced the Apple 1 computer. But it was the Apple II that became a huge success and gave Apple its position as a critical player in the then-nascent PC industry, culminating in a 1980 IPO that made Jobs a multimillionaire.

Despite the subsequent success of the Mac, Jobs' relationship with internal management soured, and in 1985 the board removed most of his powers and he left the company, selling all but one share of his Apple holdings.

Apple's fortunes waned after that. However, its purchase of NeXT -- the computer company Jobs founded after leaving Apple -- in 1997 brought him back into the fold. Later that year, he became interim CEO and in 2000, the company dropped "interim" from his title.

On Wednesday, Apple shares slid to $357.40 in extended trading after a brief halt. They had gained 0.7 percent to close at $376.18 on the Nasdaq.

Analysts again expressed confidence in the Apple bench, headed by longtime company No. 2 and supply-chain maven Cook.

"Investors are very comfortable with Tim Cook even though Jobs has been a driver of innovation and clearly an Apple success. Tim has shown Apple can still outperform extremely well when he's been acting as CEO," said Cross Research analyst Shannon Cross.

"I don't know if it's a health issue. I don't know if it is a shock. Most likely it was going to happen at some point. Why today versus another day? I don't know."

Oscar makes to Brazil win for Under20 football Worldcup

A hat-trick by Oscar lifted Brazil to a 3-2 extra-time triumph over Portugal on Saturday in the final of the under-20 football World Cup.

After opening the scoring in the fifth minute, Oscar struck a second half equaliser that sent the match to extra-time after full-time saw the teams deadlocked at 2-2.

Oscar got the winner in the 111th minute, lofting a ball from the right that arched over Portugal 'keeper Mika and gave Brazil a fifth under-20 World Cup title after its runner-up finish two years ago.

Although Brazil started the favourite over a Portuguese team seeking a third under-20 crown, the match was tightly contested throughout.

Oscar broke through in the fifth with a free-kick into the corner that caught Mika napping. It was the first goal surrendered by Portugal in the tournament.

Nelson Oliveira set up Portugal's equaliser with a cross that Alex fired home in the ninth.

And Oliveira put Portugal ahead in the 59th, breaking free on the right and running past a defender to beat Brazil 'keeper Gabriel with a sharply angled shot.

Brazil's equaliser came in the 78th minute when Mika blocked a shot by Dudu, only for Oscar to turn and slot the ball home.

This victory avenged the result of the 1991 final, when Portugal beat Brazil on penalties.

Mexico third

Earlier, Mexico beat France 3-1 in the third-place play-off. Ulises Davila, Jorge Enriquez and Edson Rivera scored for Mexico after Alexandre Lacazette put France ahead in the eighth minute.

The results:

Final: Brazil 3 (Oscar 5, 78, 111) bt Portugal 2 (Alex 9, Nelson Oliveira 59).

Third place: Mexico 3 (Davila 12, Enriquez 49, Rivera 71) bt France 1 (Lacazette 8) . — AFP

Murray wins Cincinnati Masters

Novak Djokovic quit with shoulder pain on Sunday to lose only his second match this season, as Andy Murray won the Cincinnati Masters 6-4, 3-0 over the ailing world number one.

Djokovic, who has won 57 matches and nine titles in 2011, will now have a week to rest before the start of the US Open.

The Serb lasted only 71 minutes on court, quitting moments before a downpour drenched players and spectators and put the start of the women’s final in doubt.

Djokovic said the shoulder problem has worsened over the last week or so.

“I was quite exhausted playing many matches, but the exhaustion is not the reason. I just could not serve. I served an average 90 miles per hour the first serve. I could have maybe played another couple of games, but what for?” he asked.

“It’s unfortunate that I had to finish this way. I really tried.

It didn’t make sense for me to continue. The good thing is that there is a week — eight days — to the start of the US Open. So I think that’s enough time for me to get ready.

“I cannot beat a player like Murray today with one stroke. But I’m confident that I can recover and be ready for the US Open.” Murray, winner of the title over Djokovic in 2008, claimed his second trophy of the season following Queen’s club in June in London.

Trailing 0—3 in the second set, Djokovic walked to the sidelines and shook hands with precise timing as the skies opened moments later.

Murray’s win was his seventh Masters 1000 title and left him 2—1 in finals this season. He improved to 18—9 in finals.

Djokovic exited after compiling a 57—2 record with nine titles so far in 2011.

Murray lifted his career mark against the Serb to 4—6. Murray had complained of hamstring pain during his Saturday semi—final win over Mardy Fish but showed no signs of physical problems in the final.

Maria Sharapova and Jelena Jankovic were due to play for the women’s title, weather permitting.

Novak Djokovic won Montreal title

Novak Djokovic beat American Mardy Fish 6-2, 3-6, 6-4 on Sunday for the Montreal title, becoming the first man to win five ATP Masters 1000 tournaments in the same season.

Djokovic, who was crowned world number one after winning Wimbledon, has now claimed his ninth title of the season, in which he has won 53 of 54 matches played.

He has previously taken 2011 Masters honours at Indian Wells, Miami, Madrid and Rome. Djokovic came through on his fourth match point after Fish saved three on errors from the Serb, also the Canadian champion in 2007. A service winner after two hours, 23 minutes finally earned the victory.

“It was a close match, for sure. A couple of points, one good return game in the third set, decided the winner,” said Djokovic.

“But it’s a final. You can somehow expect that the players are evenly matched, and they both want to win the title badly. I knew that I had to fight for it. Up to the last moment, you didn’t really know who is going to win, but I believed I could do it. This was a big satisfaction.” Fish was playing in his third straight final of the summer after winning Atlanta and playing the Los Angeles final.

Djokovic now stands 7-0 over Fish, the sixth seed.

“I’m not getting tired of this (victories), it was a pleasure playing against Mardy. My team and I have done it again,” said Djokovic, who said tht he dealt with a small shoulder problem all week but is not concrned for next week’s event in Cinicnnati, Ohio.

“It’s so great to win another title. We played a great match. I had a few lucky points in the third set to break.” Djokovic also won a title in his first event since becoming the top-ranked player, duplicating the feat of Pete Sampras from 1993 in Hong Kong.

Djokovic has now won 27 of his 40 career finals. Fish was the only player this week to take a set from the Serb who finished with four aces and three breaks of serve.

“It was another great effort from Novak. I’m getting a bit tired of this, though,” Fish joked after another career defeat by the Serb.

He was disappointed to lose: “This loss is really hard to take, just so much energy mentally and physically goes into going that far. I wanted it so badly -- it hurts.

“I put myself in a lot of positions to have chances, I just didn’t execute on the big points,” Fish said. “There’s a reason why he’s won so many matches this year. He’s got to be leading the tour in break points saved, I’m sure, among other things. Those are huge.

Both players now travel to Cincinnati for next week’s Masters, the last major tune-up before the start of the US Open on August 29.

Google to join Motorola Mobility business for $12.5 bn

In a bid to strengthen its mobile business, Google announced on Monday that it would acquire Motorola Mobility Holdings, the cell phone business that was split from Motorola, for $40 a share in cash, or $12.5 billion.

The offer by far Google's largest ever for an acquisition is 63 per cent above the closing price of Motorola Mobility shares on Friday last. Motorola manufactures phones that run on Google's Android software.

Android has become an increasingly important platform for Google, as global smartphone adoption accelerates. The platform, launched in 2007, is now used in more than 150 million devices, with 39 manufacturers.

The acquisition would turn Google, which makes the Android mobile operating system, into a full-fledged cell phone manufacturer, in direct competition with Apple.

The deal answers a big question about Google's next strategic step in wireless. Google has been battling with Apple and Microsoft over patents.

Last month, Apple and Microsoft led a consortium of technology companies in a $4.5 billion purchase of roughly 6,000 patents from Nortel Networks, the Canadian telecommunications maker that filed for bankruptcy in 2008.

Google, which lost out in the bidding, criticised the deal as an anticompetitive strategy. Several weeks later, Google paid $4.5 billion for more than 1,000 patents from IBM. Motorola holds more than 17,000 patents.

While the acquisition will move Google directly into the telecommunications hardware business, Larry Page, Google's Chief Executive, said in a blog post that “this acquisition will not change our commitment to run Android as an open platform. Motorola will remain a licensee of Android and Android will remain open. We will run Motorola as a separate business.'' Still, the deal is certain to attract significant antitrust scrutiny. The Federal Trade Commission is already investigating Google's dominance in several areas of its business.

The acquisition of Motorola is a notable one for Google, which has made dozens of acquisitions but has only tackled a handful of billion-dollar transactions in its 13-year history. On the company's official blog, Mr. Page said Google was purchasing the handset maker to bolster its Android mobile operating system and increase the number of patents it owned.

Android accounted for 43.4 per cent of smartphone sales in the second quarter, according to Gartner Research, a major increase from the year ago period, when it made up about 17 per cent of sales.

“Our acquisition of Motorola will increase competition by strengthening Google's patent portfolio, which will enable us to better protect Android from anti-competitive threats from Microsoft, Apple and other companies,'' Mr. Page said.

Carl C. Icahn, Motorola Mobility's second-largest shareholder, urged the company last month to “explore alternatives regarding its patent portfolio to enhance shareholder value.'' Icahn owns 9.03 per cent of Motorola Mobility.

Lazard and the law firm of Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton advised Google. Frank Quattrone's investment bank, Qatalyst Partners, and Centerview Partners advised Motorola Mobility.

The acquisition has been approved by both boards.

Steve Jobs leads Apple to world domination

Apple has some 50,000 workers around the world, but few of them would argue that it’s a guy currently on sick leave who has done more than anyone to turn the Silicon Valley institution into the most valuable company in the world.

The California-based consumer electronics company achieved that lofty status on Tuesday when its unstoppable run helped it briefly blast past Exxon Mobil in market capitalization.

Though volatile trading quickly overturned the coup, the company’s long-term trajectories signal that it is only a matter of time before Apple takes the top spot for good.

That will be a remarkable vindication for Steve Jobs, 55, the college dropout turned technology visionary who did as much as anyone to instigate the PC revolution after launching Apple in 1976.

Now he has done more than anyone to usher in the post PC-world, where the data and content that matter most to people and companies is available at every moment on myriad devices.

The basic outline of his rise, fall and triumphant resurrection bears the hallmark of a morality tale of the digital age. He saw the future of computing when he founded Apple together with Steve Wozniak, and pioneered the use of a mouse and a point-and-click command process after seeing the concept at a Xerox research lab.

His idea was promptly copied by Microsoft, which made its Windows software available to anyone and quickly captured a dominant market share in the rapidly growing market.

Mr. Jobs’ insistence that Apple software run only on Apple machines was a large part of the reason he lost a boardroom power struggle in 1985, prompting him to leave the company.

While Apple’s fortunes dwindled to the status of a struggling niche player flirting with bankruptcy, Jobs developed Pixar Animation, which would become one of the most successful film studios, and a new computer company called Next.

He was called back to Apple’s helm in 1997 and promptly set about transforming Apple from a puny weakling reliant on the life support of Microsoft to the world’s most valuable company.

Mr. Jobs’ driving idea was that the sci-fiction vision of a digital future -- where we would video-conference with wristwatch devices and download movies and music over invisible networks -- was just around the corner.

As other companies remained trapped in gradual refinements of existing technologies, Apple would make this future happen.

The first step in the grand strategy was the iPod, launched almost a decade ago. In the whiz-bang age of the iPhone and Android, it this device seems awfully humble, but 10 years ago it revolutionized the way people listened to music, combining software and hardware in a beautiful package that for the first time made it easy and intuitive to make huge music collections portable.

He revitalized Apple’s computers with the iMac and established iTunes as the unrivalled online store for the purchase of music and video. Within six years, Apple sold more than 100 million iPods, while five years after the 2003 launch of iTunes it had sold more than 5 billion downloads.

Apple completed its rout with the 2007 launch of the iPhone.

Just four years ago the idea that hundreds of millions of people would routinely use the internet over their mobile phones seemed hallucinatory, given the clunkiness of existing smartphones and their software. But Jobs knew better.

In one fell swoop, Apple came from nowhere to dominate what quickly became the biggest consumer electronics market in history and overtake such market leaders as Nokia, Motorola and Microsoft.

Even that did not satisfy Jobs’ ambitions for Apple. Last year’s launch of the iPad swept aside decades of tablet computer failures to create yet another new market for Apple to dominate while bringing down the curtain on traditional PCs.

Apple is far from done.

The big question is whether Jobs will be around to lead the next phase, as questions about his health remain unanswered, says tech blogger Jesus Diaz of the gadget site Gizmodo.

“It was Steve Jobs’ unique vision and his strict command of a brilliant troop of engineers that made -- and still makes -- it all possible. Together, they created the future,” Diaz said.

“If Jobs goes, Apple could face the same long decline as Microsoft and Sony. I’m convinced that Apple can’t be Apple without Steve.”

IBM drop from University of Illinois's supercomputer project

IBM Corp has dropped out of a project to build one of the world’s fastest supercomputers at the University of Illinois, saying it requires too much financial and technical support.

The move leaves the university looking for someone to build the $300 million-plus Blue Waters system that it still hopes to deliver by the fall of 2012. The school’s National Centre for Supercomputing Applications will have just a few weeks to customize its plans to a new builder and present them to the project’s primary financier, the federal government’s National Science Foundation.

There is no guarantee the project that was originally expected to go online this year will continue.

IBM won’t say how much money the project would have cost the company, but Monday’s announcement followed several months of talks with university officials.

“As we moved forward in the project, increased cost from the final design and other changes made us come to the conclusion” not to continue, IBM spokeswoman Joanna Brewer said.

John Melchi, who is senior associate director at the university’s National Centre for Supercomputing Applications, said IBM’s decision is disappointing but said that with the NSF waiting for a revised plan there’s little time for the 120 or so people at the university who’ve worked on the project to do anything but keep working.

“When you look at the work you’ve put in the previous three or four years, it is disheartening,” he said. “Honestly, there’s a certain amount of energy here; people are inspired.” The NSF’s National Science Board, a 20-member group of scientists, expects to have a revised plan to vote on as early as mid-September, NSF spokeswoman Lisa-Joy Zgorski said.

“Whether or not we move forward with a comparable alternative ultimately rests upon the decision of the National Science Board,” she said.

AC Milan won UEFA Supercup in China

Zlatan Ibrahimovic and Kevin-Prince Boateng reversed Wesley Sneijder’s opener in AC Milan’s 2-1 defeat of Inter Milan Saturday in the Italian Supercup tie played in Beijing.

The Serie A champions had a sluggish start before the 80,000 fans filling the Bird’s nest stadium and fell behind on a free kick from the Dutch sharpshooter, but secured the win with a furious second half.

Milan’s sixth Supercup victory sees them move one ahead of city rivals Inter in the all-time rankings.

Under new coach Gian Piero Gasperini, Inter hardly suffered in the first half from the absences of Brazil defenders Maicon and Lucio, while Argentine players Esteban Cambiasso and striker Diego Milito were also allowed a rest after July’s Copa America.

Milan did little early in the game, save a missed shot from Robinho after a pass-and-go with Ibrahimovic, before falling behind on Sneijder’s majestic shot.

After a high drive from Dejan Stankovic, the Dutchman on 22 minutes stunned Christian Abbiati by the closest post with a swerving free kick from the top-left corner of the box.

Inter’s Argentine newcomer Ricardo Alvarez aimed high on 35 minutes and Samuel Eto’o tried from a tight angle as the Nerazzurri contained the Devils’ equalizing efforts with Gasperini’s three-man defence closely supported by the midfield.

Ibra, however, had a great chance on 40 minutes, but nodded against the post off a cross from Ignazio Abate from the right flank.

Milan veteran Clarence Seedorf and his compatriot Sneijder fired high early in the second half as Milan pressed for an equalizer that Ibra nodded home on the hour.

A hammering action allowed Robinho to set up Seedorf on the right for a precise cross that the Swede deflected into the empty net.

Massimiliano Allegri brought on striker Pato for his Brazil compatriot Robinho as Milan kept up a brisk pace and reversed on 69 minutes with Boateng’s flick after a great effort from Pato.

Julio Cesar only managed to slap his compatriot’s firm shot against the post and was helpless as the Ghanaian Boateng slid to deflect.

Striker Giampaolo Pazzini came on for Stankovic, but Inter failed to create telling troubles for the Devils’ defence.

“We knew it was a hard game,” Allegri said. “It was a derby and it was not easy to start the season with a game like this. We did not start well. In the second half we played better, with more courage.” The Chinese capital is to host two more editions of the trophy by 2014, following a deal worth about 10 million euros (14.3 million dollars) with the Serie A football league.

"The Amazing Spider-Man"may relese on May 2, 2014 not in 2012

Even though "The Amazing Spider-Man" won't hit theaters until July 3, 2012, the studio is already mapping out plans for a sequel.

The new, revamped Spider-Man film, directed by Marc Webb, stars Andrew Garfield as the socially-awkward Peter Parker. The Hollywood Reporter reports that the studio has already lined up James Vanderbilt, who worked on the screenplay for the new Spidey film, to begin work on its sequel.

“I think it speaks volumes about our confidence in what we are seeing on the new film and our desire to move quickly on the next installment,” a Sony Pictures Studios exec told Deadline.

Friday, Sony set a May 2, 2014 release date for the sequel. No other films have been scheduled for that particular release date as of yet, but it will be interesting to see who dares to battle it out against "Spider-Man" for a box office win.

Rahul Dravid announced his retirement

Less than 12 hours after earning a shock recall to India’s ODI squad, Rahul Dravid announced his retirement from one-day and T20 cricket at the end of the England tour.

Dravid made the announcement after India’s practice game against Northamptonshire.

“I am honoured and privileged to be selected for the one-day team,” Dravid said.

“Since I had not been picked for one-day cricket for the last two years, I was obviously a little surprised and to be honest, because I had not been picked, I had not informed the selectors or the board of my desire to solely focus on Test cricket.”

“At the end of this one-day series, I would like to announce my retirement from one-day and Twenty20 cricket and concentrate on ly on Test cricket. I am committed, as always to give my best to India in this one-day series and obviously the Test series that follows.”

"In the short term I am committed because now I have been picked for the series, but in the long term I think it is best for me and Indian cricket that I focus on Test cricket."

Google Chrome ranks 3rd popular browser: Report

Google Chrome is now the world’s third most popular web browser with one in five users preferring it.

Google Chrome has also emerged as Britain’s second most popular web browser, edging Mozilla’s Firefox and nibbling at Microsoft’s Internet Explorer, the current leader.

Chrome accounted for 22 percent of the British web market, compared to 45 percent of users preferring Internet Explorer. Apple’s Safari stood at the fourth place with nine percent share.

But experts pointed out that Internet Explorer’s market share was falling despite the programme already pre—installed on almost every computer sold in Britain, The Telegraph reports.

Google said its surge in popularity could be explained by its speed of delivery results, its security and a new ad campaign.

Lars Bak, the Google engineer responsible for Chrome, based in the Danish countryside, said the company’s aim was speed. He said users should “never be happy” with the existing speed.

Google has relesed new service called Page Speed Service

Google announced a new service Thursday that it hopes will make slow web pages as anachronistic as manual typewriters.

The web search giant unveiled a new option called Page Speed Service that accelerates webpage loading times by running them through a special application that rectifies bottlenecks and loads the pages to end users through Google’s global network of servers.

Google engineering manager Ram Ramani said in a blog post that in tests the service had increased load times by 25 to 60 per cent.

“To use the service, you need to sign up and point your site’s DNS entry to Google,” Ramani wrote.

“Page Speed Service fetches content from your servers, rewrites your pages by applying Web performance best practices, and serves them to end users via Google’s servers across the globe. Your users will continue to access your site just as they did before, only with faster load times.”

The service is currently available to a limited number of website operators at no cost. Google plans to roll out a fee—based service later this year, Ramani said.

Button celebrated his 200th F1 start by winning the Hungarian GP

McLaren's Jenson Button celebrated his 200th Formula One start by winning the Hungarian Grand Prix on Sunday after a thrilling race decided by tyre choices in slippery and wet conditions.

Red Bull's Sebastian Vettel was second despite an error-strewn race to increase his championship lead over teammate Mark Webber to 85 points and move him closer to defending his title with eight races left after the mid-season break.
Ferrari's Fernando Alonso was third.

Briton Button sealed his second victory of the season after being wheel to wheel with Lewis Hamilton only for his teammate to drop back to fourth after a choosing the wrong tyres in the rain and then serving a drive through penalty following a spin.
“Guys, perfect going into the summer break. Let's come back and win them all,” Button, who took his first Grand Prix victory here in 2006 and also in the rain, told his team over the radio.
The Briton has now won 11 Grand Prix races in a career that started with Williams in 2000.
“Congratulations to Jenson, he was pushing me hard the whole race and the better man won today,” said Hamilton, who led before it all went wrong. “Of course we would have loved a one-two, I feel like I let the team down a little bit but we'll bounce back at the next race.”
Overtaking moves

With cars sliding around as drizzle and tyre strategies came and went, the less than capacity crowd at the ageing Hungaroring were treated to a string of overtaking moves at a twisty circuit where passing had been difficult in the past.

Vettel made a good start from pole but Hamilton, winner of the previous race in Germany last Sunday, kept on the World champion's tail having been second on the grid.
The slippery track contributed to Vettel running wide early on and the Briton saw his chance to speed past before his afternoon went sour.
Button, third in qualifying and winner of the rain-hit Canadian GP, then also overtook the German in partially wet conditions as McLaren again showed its race superiority over the previously dominant Red Bull.

“I was struggling a bit on the first stint. It was quite tricky,” said Vettel, who now has 234 points to Webber's 149, Hamilton's 146, Alonso's 145 and Button's 134.
Red Bull has 383 points to McLaren's 280 in the Constructors' standings.
Drizzle had been in the air throughout Sunday and there was significant spray in some areas of the track early on.

Mercedes' Nico Rosberg cut past the two Ferraris of Felipe Massa and Fernando Alonso as well as Webber in the opening exchanges as drivers struggled to keep their cars from sliding.
Brazil's Massa, who suffered serious head injuries in an accident at the Hungaroring in 2009, then spun violently into the grass on lap eight and slipped down to ninth before fighting back up to sixth having started fourth on the grid.

Teammate Alonso soon got back past Rosberg, in his 100th F1race, to move up into fourth but the Spaniard slipped back again when passed by Webber on lap 15 only for the Australian to end up fifth as the weather constantly changed.
