India to launch 'Chandrayaan-2' by 2013:Yahoo
Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO) chief K. Radhakrishnan on Wednesday said the configuration for the new moon mission 'Chandrayaan-2' is being finalized and added that it would be launched by 2013. Chandrayaan-2, which will be a joint effort between ISRO and Russia, will consist of a lander and a rover for a soft land on moon. The rover will move on the surface of the moon and pick up samples of rocks and soil and conduct a chemical analysis on it. The data would then be sent to the spacecraft orbiting above. "We are finalizing the configuration for Chandrayaan-2. This mission will have an orbiter, which will carry the lander and a rover. The lander will bring the rover to the surface of the moon and during the time it is there, (it) will take some samples to be analyzed in the orbiter and back to the earth. In the orbiter we will have certain instruments, we are finalizing which are those to be put there. It is about 50 kilograms of mass. There is a scientific team which is looking at the requirements and possibilities and also .... from Chandrayaan-1 experiment," said Radhakrishnan, on the sidelines of the launch of a book titled 'Mission Moon - Exploring the Moon with Chandrayaan-1' here. Space scientists present there delved on colonization of the moon. "The lunar environment neither has an atmosphere nor a magnetic field, so the radiation from the sun can directly hit us and severely damage our cells, which can cause cancer. So you need to get into areas where you can avoid radiation; therefore, the concept of tunnel came in. We are trying to look at tunnels where one can get in and live. Though virtually from a big civilization we will all become cavemen again," said Kasturi Rangan, former ISRO Chairman. ISRO launched Chandrayaan-1 on October 22, 2008, joining the Asian space race in the footsteps of l China and reinforcing its claim to be considered a global power. The cuboid shaped Chandrayaan-1 carried the U.S. space agency NASA's Moon Mineralogy Mapper, or M3, which found water molecules all over the moon's surface. The findings were further corroborated by three other reports. (ANI)

Aayirathil Oruvan:Review
Selvaraghavan’s two years in the making, action adventure Aayirathil Oruvan is a brave attempt at trying to come out with something new in the placid world of Tamil cinema. Breaking away from the shackles of the stereotypes, the director transports us to a whole new world and at the end of it all, we are dumb stuck by the visuals, the packaging and the new way of storytelling.
The film has a terrific first half with a basic thread, comedy, action, eye catching song picturisation, stunning visuals and grandeur. The film combines ultra-violent action with murky mysticism. The Government appoints a secret team led by archaeologist Anitha Pandian (Reemma) and a military officer Ravi (Azhagamperumal) to track down the missing links after a scientist and archaeologist (Pratap Pothen) vanishes into thin air while he was on his mission to discover the lost Chola civilization!
To help them reach the lost city, Lavanya, daughter of the missing archaeologist is roped in for the mission. And helping the group to carry their belongings through the rough and tough jungle terrain and sea is the Coolie gang led by Muthu (Karthi), a boorish, uncouth, foul mouthed guy with roving eyes. They go through some of the most inhospitable terrain full of hidden danger and nature’s fury.
Suddenly after a tedious expedition, they stumble on the lost Chola civilization and its king (Parthipan) and find unexplained links between them and the world’s earliest culture. What follows is a series of happenings that will leave you glued to the screen.
The subtle message that Selva tries to convey is that a group of people cut away from civilisation, struck with poverty and knowledge is far superior to the present generation who lack values, culture or basic human kindness. All this leads to some unexpected twists and turns in the climax till you find that history repeats once again as Muthu rescues and run away with the King’s son to the darkness, like what happened centuries back!
Aayirathil Oruvan starts with a bang, but it doesn’t unfold quickly. The second half takes a u-turn and is riddled with holes in the plot line and is confusing and tedious. It looks like another film and there are long gaps of silence in the climax which will make an ordinary viewer restless.
Directing an interweaving screenplay, Selva’s narrative structure bursts with sporadic agility along with top class camera work by Ramji.
GV Prakash’s background score and his music is tangy. Un Mela Aasadhan.. sung by Dhanush, Aishwarya Dhanush and Andrea and picturised on the lead trio is a rocker. The remixed old MGR song on Karthi and the coolies is a treat.
Reemma brings an uninhibited joie to her role as Anitha and thanks to the ability of the director has extracted a fine performance from her. Andrea is likeable and seems to have enjoyed doing the film. Parthipan is adequate as the king. But it is Karthi, who is a scream. Right from his introduction scene till the end, he is lovable and provides humour. Actually Karthi with his punchlines is getting the loudest claps as the crazy MGR fan and has made a sensational comeback three years after his debut film.
The film has to be seen in the right perspective. Selvaraghavan is trying to explore the frontiers of commercial cinema. For this alone he should be applauded.

Next "Harry Potter" movies coming in 3D
Warner Bros. will release the next two "Harry Potter" films in 3D, a move underscoring the post-"Avatar" rush for extra-dimensional box office returns.
Studios executives around town have been scrutinizing film slates for opportunities to expand forays into 3D releasing. Warners has been testing footage from its upcoming "Clash of the Titans" -- converted into 3D by an outside vendor -- and the tests have gone so well that the studio has decided to release not only "Titans" but also the two-part "Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" in 3D.
Warners refused to confirm the decisions Tuesday, but an announcement on "Titans" -- a co-production with studio-based producer Legendary Pictures -- is expected by week's end. Official word on the "Potter" pics also is awaited.
Conversion expenses have been coming down, so each film will cost just $5 million to change into 3D. Warners also will absorb an additional $5 million expense per picture to pay for 3D glasses for exhibitors handling the movies.
In a related move, Warners will push back the release of "Titans" one week to April 2. "Deathly Hallows: Part I" is set to unspool November 19, and "Part II" is slotted for July 15, 2011.
The only previous "Potter" pic to dabble in 3D was last year's "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince," which included brief footage viewable in 3D in Imax venues. It was unclear whether "Potter" author J.K. Rowling had to OK the move into the third dimension.
As for the impact on box office prospects for the final two "Potter" sequels, consider the more imminent situation with "Titans."
A remake of a 1981 film starring Laurence Olivier, "Titans" previously might have been expected to fetch no more than $200 million domestically, and even that was an aggressive projection. Released in 3D, Warners figures to reap well north of $200 million, with 2007's $211 million domestic grosser "300" considered a beatable benchmark.
"Titans" in 3D also is considered a safe bet to best the $245 million in foreign coin that Warners fetched with "300."
The "Titans" move is not without risk. The installed base of 3D movie screens has been growing rapidly, but it's not sufficient to release the film entirely in 3D.
That should be less of a concern by the time the next "Potter" hits multiplexes. But execs also are quietly confident of getting enough 3D playdates for "Titans."
"I would not think it would be an issue to establish ourselves in the 3D marketplace with 'Titans,'" a studio insider said. "By sliding it back a week, we should at least have enough screens in the major markets."
Warners should secure upward of 1,000 playdates for "Titans," which will unspool a week after Paramount bows DreamWorks Animation's spring tentpole "How to Train Your Dragon."
The "Titans" move might spur further reshuffling in the spring release calendar, as its new date makes for a fifth wide opener set for Easter weekend, which historically is a solid boxoffice session but hardly one to support that many big pics.
Other wide openers set for April 2 include Fox's "Diary of a Wimpy Kid," a likely PG-rated film adapted from a book series popular with middle-schoolers; Disney's PG-rated Miley Cyrus starrer "The Last Song," adapted from a Nicholas Sparks novel; Universal's futuristic action thriller "Repo Men," starring Jude Law and Forest Whitaker; and Lionsgate's latest Tyler Perry pic, "Why Did I Get Married Too?"
Meantime, the move of "Potter" into the extra dimension could prompt other high-profile moves. Could a 3D James Bond loom?
Warners' decision with its "Potter" franchise is likely at least to prompt 3D discussions between MGM and 007 producers. But unlike Warners' incremental move with the "Potter" franchise -- going with full-on 3D only after an initial foray into partial Imax 3D -- Lion execs would be starting at square one in talks on Bond.
Still, there is the siren call of those extra-dimensional dollars -- and other 3D currencies. In addition to lusting after "Avatar"-like boxoffice, industry execs have taken note of how well 3D pics play overseas.
Warners 3D horror pic "The Final Destination" overperformed internationally this summer, and Sony's 2D "Zombieland" did less than one-fourth as well overseas as domestically a few months later.
Perhaps by no coincidence, Sony might send "Spider-Man" into the third dimension with the webslinger's next pic.

100 points in half a basketball game
Yates High School in Houston already had proven it could score a lot of points, topping the century mark five times in its first 13 games. Tuesday night the team topped itself - scoring 100 points in the first half on the way to a 170-35 victory over Houston (Lee) High.
The totals - both at the half and for the game - broke state records in Texas. The 100-point first half is believed to be the second-highest total all-time in the country.
But it does not come without controversy. On the day that Yates takes over the top spot in the RivalsHigh Top 100 boys basketball rankings, it figures to be answering questions about sportsmanship. The game was marred by a third-quarter fight and led to a war of words by the coaches afterward.
"I feel very disrespected right now," Lee coach Jacques Armant told Jenny Dial of The Houston Chronicle. "I don't understand why Yates just kept scoring and pressing when they were up so much. These are kids. It isn't good to do that to other young men."
Yates coach Greg Wise didn't apologize for his team's play.
"We practice running, pressing, trapping every day," he told The Chronicle. "If we get to a game and I tell them not to do what we do in practice, I am not coaching well. I am not leaving my starters in the whole game. We have 15 guys, and all 15 play."
And all play hard, Wise said. He said it isn't fair to tell them to play any other way.
"They work really hard in practice, and when they go in, they deserve the chance to play hard and compete, too," Wise said. "We are looking for another state championship, and we can't get that unless we are continuing to get better and perfect our game. We aren't scoring on other teams out of disrespect."
Lee's players apparently felt differently. In the third quarter, one took matters into his own hands with an intentional foul that led to a fight, according to The Chronicle's report.
Joseph Young finished with 37 points. |
But most of the damage had already been done by that point.
Yates got going early, pouring in 57 points in the first quarter alone. It reached 100 when junior guard Ronnie Lewis hit a 3-pointer in the second quarter. The team was well aware of its total.
"When Ronnie hit that three, I was on the bench, but I had a smile on my face," Providence commit and senior guard Joseph Young told Texashoops.com, RivalsHigh's partner publication in Texas. "Getting 170, that's a first for me. We keep on setting records."
Yates, the defending Texas Class 4A state champion, opened the season with a 142-80 win against Dickinson. It has scored 163 against Houston Sam Houston, 148 against Houston Kashmere, 139 against Houston Stephen F. Austin, 131 against San Antonio Country Day, 128 against Houston Westside and 108 against Huntsville (Ala.) Butler this season. Only six times has Yates missed the 100-point mark, and four of those six games were at the Iolani Classic in Hawaii.
Yates' 100 first-half points ranks second nationally all-time. Loudon, Tenn., scored 158 in a half and wound up scoring 197 in a game in 1956. Yates' 170 points overall ties with Hobbs, N.M., (1969-70 season) for eighth all-time. The national record for points in a game is 211, set in 1964 by Grand Avenue High School in DeQuincy, La.
Brandon Peters, a Western Kentucky signee, scored a game-high 43 points in the win for Yates (14-0). Young finished with 37, Alex Davis had 25, and Darius Gardner , a Stephen F. Austin signee, had 21 for the Lions. Defensively, Yates held Lee to only 16 points through the first three quarters.
The result marked the fourth time this season that Yates has won by at least 50 - it fell a point short in its 148-49 victory over Houston (Texas) Kashmere - but is the first time by more than 100. The team, however, appears more concerned with its point total than its margin of victory.
Yates has scored 1,666 points this season. The team currently is averaging 119 points per game, which would shatter the national record of 114.6 set by Hobbs. Yates also has a chance to break the 1972-73 Houston Wheatley team's record of 31 100-point games in a season.
That Wheatley team, in addition, recorded 4,567 points in 42 games. If Yates finishes 40-0 and continues its 119 points-per-game average, it will record 4,760 and be ranked second all-time. The Florien, La., team from the 1979-80 season recorded 4,947 points but achieved the mark in 65 games.
"We're trying to get all of those records," Young said.
And perhaps a national title along the way, too.
Here's the scary thing. Now that it is in league play, Yates' schedule the rest of the way doesn't figure to provide many tests until the state tournament. An undefeated season appears realistic.
The biggest challenge may be sportsmanship. Lee's coach said other teams don't want to play Yates.
"No coach wants to put his kids in a position to be embarrassed," Armant told The Chronicle. "We have great kids on our team, hard workers, and I am proud that they played the whole game tonight, but you can see how coaches are hesitant to put their kids on the floor with a team that is going to score on them that way."
