Chennai Open Tennis-Mens Winner

Marin Cilic overcame an inspired Somdev Devvarman 6-4,7-6(3) to claim his first Chennai Open title at a packed SDAT Tennis Stadium on 11th January 2009. This is the 20 year old's second ATP career title.

With the top seed Nikolay Davydenko withdrawing due to an injured heel after the first round, and second seed Stanislas Wawrinka losing to Flavio Cipolla in the first round, Cilic was the tournament's favourite. He took down seventh seed Janko Tipsarevic, 7-6(3),6-4 in the Quarters and eight seed Marcel Granollers 7-5,2-6,6-4 in the Semis. Somdev Devvarman had a dream run at the tournament, having beat last year's semi-finalist and sixth seed Carlos Moya 6-3,7-6(4) in the second round and fourth seed, 6'10" Ivo Karlovic 7-6(4),6-4 in the Quarters. His Semi Final match with Rainer Schuettler was called off, with the fifth seed withdrawing due to a wrist injury.
